Talk that will take listener back to 1980's and how slideshow was possible without power point, one interesting example of what Machine Learning SW was back then and how that all will lead to the hyperscale public cloud operations. After the talk you will have basic understanding of risk based product security SW management, risk based decision making, how hyperscale public cloud works and how it might look when one main is protecting everybody's privacy in this global systems. This seminar is discussing about the case study of one person, learnings the impact of choices made and what kind of working philosophy there is that may give direction to the whole career that keeps it all very interesting and dynamic at the most of the time. - - - - - 10.1.2019 Esa Räsänen: "The Physics of Heartbeats & Drumbeats: Fractals behind Health & Groove" The heart appears to beat rather regularly. In reality, however, heart rate variability (HRV) is highly complex and erratic, even for healthy individuals at rest. Similarly, it is known that musicians do not keep time with the precision of a metronome. In both of these examples, the variations from the mean can be characterized by a fractal with prominent long-range correlations. Astonishingly, fractal heartbeat variations indicate a healthy heart, and fractal flucutuations in the drumbeat may contribute to the groove of a musical piece. In this presentation we justify these claims with a review of earlier discoveries in these two fields, supplemented by our recent findings. We also present the most common time-series analysis tools to characterize the complexity of fluctuations. In particular, we demonstrate how the well-known detrended fluctuation analysis can be improved to account for rapid dynamical changes in the scaling properties of a time series. This method may open up to a path into new applications in, e.g., health and sport diagnostics. - - - - - 31.1.2019 Johana Kuncova-Kallio: "Multi-Parametric Surface Plasmon Resonance - a Finnish twist to a physics discovery from 50s" Plasmons were predicted in 50s, they were seen much later. Surface plasmons were then utilized in a product commercialized in 90s that was used to help you from getting sick. Later, the same surface plasmons were further enlightened in Finland to improve your phone, your laptop, save your from spoiled food, and even to save Finnish paper industry. Find out how in my lecture! P.S. I am looking for: 1) a mathematics student with passion for formulas or a physics student with passion for mathematics 2) a materials student with passion for surfaces or optics student who is not afraid to get their hands dirty Keywords: nanoparticle, nanolayer, characterization, surface interaction, real-time, biosensor, optics, plasmonics - - - - - TR - Reijo Kouhia: "Continuum modelling of quasi-brittle materials"
